5 Keys to Maintaining Small Business Motivation and Success

Happy Motivation Monday to you!  Today we’re discussing 5 keys to keeping up your small business motivation particularly when it comes to your progress in your small business’ internet marketing efforts.  We know how challenging it can be to keep up, so here are some cool tips that will assist you in your online endeavors.

5 Keys to Maintaining your Small Business Motivation

Key #1:  Plan Your Small Business Internet Marketing Steps In Advance

Planning ahead is an essential key to small business success.   Just as a marathon runner must go through steps to train and prepare for a challenging marathon, you as a small business owner must take the necessary preparation to create a marketing strategy and implement the steps that will prepare you for success.

For instance, if you are working on a small business blog make sure you’ve selected your primary keywords and are learning and implementing the keys to getting indexed (ranked) on Google, Yahoo and MSN’s first page.

When I started blogging I didn’t have a thorough plan or have main keywords, and I had to fix several structural things on my blog.  It wasn’t much work to do.  In fact I also loved it because I’m a geek (lol), but if I had planned appropriately I would have gotten to a faster and more effective start.

The key to successful online marketing is to learn some strategies, plan, and implement without hemming and hawing.

Learn, plan and then implement.

Key #2:  Learn from your Internet Marketing Mistakes

Just as I mentioned I corrected some mistakes, understand that mistakes and failures are necessary in order for you to gain clarity and move forward.

When you fail just remember that:

“Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”

- Henry Ford

Whenever you find that you have made a mistake, don’t get caught up in the fact that you made a mistake.  Take the experience and ask “how could I prevent this from happening again, and how do I correct this and move forward.”

Most of us believe that anytime we make a mistake, we have 20 fingers pointing and laughing at us.  Chances are no one realized you made a mistake but you.  I won’t get into a discussion about the way society instills in us a deep rooted fear of making mistakes.  You are smart enough to know that.  However, that doesn’t give us an excuse to blame.   Mistakes and failures are essential opportunities for growth!

So embrace them and just keep on a movin’!

Key #3:  Work on your Marketing Strengths and not Your Weaknesses

Many small business owners feel that weaknesses are where one should focus their attention.  This could not be further from the truth.

You have very unique talents, skills, and gifts and to not focus on your natural talents would be counter intuitive.

When you focus on what you do well, you build a passion for your work.  When you have passion for what you do you will do it even better.   Working from your passion will keep you in that productivity groove.  It will allow you to thrive instead of just survive online!

If you focus on the fact that you have “x, y, or z” weakness, then you are concentrating on the fact that you are weak and must fix yourself.  If you are focusing on your weakness you will be attracting more of it.  This is true because whatever you draw your attention and focus to will become your predominant focus.

So choose to focus on what you do well!

When you focus on your strengths you can have others on your team assisting you in the areas where you are weak and they are strong.  This harmoniously will bring huge online marketing results.

Key #4:  Continue to Feed your Mind with Small Business Motivation, Education and Internet Marketing Training

The more you feed your mind with positive thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs as well as internet marketing training and education, the more you will sharpen your saw and see great gains in your online marketing success.

Whatever your mind consumes it will respond to.  If you are constantly reading negative news, your focus will be on the negativity and fear that is pervasive in the media and culture.  This will transfer into fears about online marketing.  Fear is contagious and so is positivity, so choose to keep positive.

Feed your mind with what it needs to succeed and you will remain on the fast track to small business marketing success.

And to be even more productive, as you are sharpening one of your skill sets, for instance, your persuasion skills, take a week and learn all you can about persuasion.  This way you are being strategic about the way you are honing you sharpening your saw.  If you want to sharpen that saw do it with the tools that will sharpen it instead of focusing on something that will sharpen an axe.  For instance if you are wanting to increase your persuasion skills, don’t focus on sharpening your web mastering skills.  Focus on feeding yourself books, video and other training on persuasion strategies.  Be strategic about it.

Key #5:  Monitor Your Progress – Because One Small Internet Marketing Tweak Can Make a BIG Difference.

Keep track of your progress.

You’d be surprised how one minor tweak can make a big difference in your online marketing.  That is why it is essential for you to monitor your progress online.

For instance in a small business blogging mastermind session, Cenay, Deon and I were discussing the benefits of keeping track of your Google Analytics metrics and statistics, as they tell you how well you are progressing with your goal to give your readers exactly what they want.

If you notice that your visitors are only spending 35 seconds and then leaving your site chances are:

  • you may be using inadequate keywords
  • your blog theme may be distracting your visitors
  • you’re not providing the content they are looking for
  • a combination of the above
  • or a host of other things.

You won’t know what it is until you start making small tweaks and letting some time go by and seeing if your average page view time has gone up.

Just one small tweak may make significant changes in your small business internet marketing results.
