With all the talk about the economic recession, small business owners seem to be more fearful about their profitability.
Below are some tips to help you keep focused and center your small business Internet marketing efforts.
- Keep Media Consumption to a Minimum or Cut it Out of Your Daily Routine Completely!
I once heard that CNN really stands for “Constant Negative News.” Think about how many “good” news stories you hear about anything! Feeding you mind with negativity and fear will only keep you in that state and will keep you lacking confidence in your small business marketing and in yourself.
- When others are fearful that means the economic climate is ripe for you to get in the game – if you step out the box and think creatively that is.
Just because everyone else is fearful of economic circumstances doesn’t mean you have to be!
When others are fearful, be creative with your small business marketing. This doesn’t mean you have to give away the farm.
This just means you can offer something you normally don’t. For example, give away something of high perceived value to your potential client so that they will be more inclined to chose you over your competition to conduct business.
For instance, if you are a fitness trainer, you can offer a free short video, audio, or E-book on the “Top 5 Mistakes that Keep Women from Keeping New Years Weight loss Resolutions.”
At the end of your video, audio or e-book, you can have a call to action for a product or service that will help your client stay on track with their weight loss goals. You can perhaps offer a “bonus” session or product for them conducting business with you within 3 days of having seen, heard, or read your free offer and create a sense of urgency for your prospect to take action.
- Hold a customer appreciation event and offer a free gift of high perceived value in exchange for referrals. You can do a physical event or a live broadcast on a platform such as UStream, which allows you to broadcast an event online for free! Tell them they can claim their free gift online (could be that same video, e-book, or audio if they fill out an online survey).
There are many creative marketing ideas you can employ in a down economy. Don’t let the economy keep you down. The climate is ripe for you to keep the competition down and for you to take advantage of the economic climate!
P.S. For my local Virginians, I’ll be discussing how to recession proof your small business income with small business blogging this Wednesday. We’ll give you a special recap soon.
Make it an Awesome Monday!

Hi Sanja,
Thanks for the compliment. You are absolutely right, and I do love that quote. “When one door closes, another door opens.” Right on. I appreciate you.
