SEO: To Follow Or Not To Follow

I get lot’s of questions about what the difference is, and why you should care which is used. I hope by the end of this post, you will understand how getting this right, can increase the Google Page Rank of your blog, by plugging up some of the holes you have.

The best way to not pass “link juice” (aka Google Page Rank) to a site you are linking to is to add rel=”nofollow” to the link in the HTML code. In WordPress, this means that while you are writing the post, you need to use the “Insert Link” feature, then go into the HTML editor mode, find the link in the code, then add the rel=”nofollow”, then switch back to Visual mode and continue writing your posts.

What the NoFollow tag looks like:

Instead of linking to a site with
<a href=”http://www.SomeSite.com”>Visit My Friends Site</a>
the link would now look like
<a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://www.SomeSite.com”>Visit My Friends Site</a>

The problem for lots of us was that many times we forget to manually add the code to the link! Not to mention that it is just a real pain-in-the-butt to do it anyways. And despite the fact that search engine optimization is very important to the life-blood of your blog, it will be overlooked if it’s hard to do.So, I went looking for a plugin to help with this.

NoFollow Plugin For WordPress Posts

A slick little plugin that, when activated, simply adds a checkbox to the “Insert Link” dialog box. If you want to “nofollow” the link, just check the box.

You can grab a copy of that plugin here, http://blog.bunkbedsnow.com/nofollow/ and if you use the Plugin Central plugin (strongly recommended), then here’s the direct link to the zip file. Just paste this into Plugin Central and click install. http://blog.bunkbedsnow.com/nofollow-post.zip

It’s my opinion that using a nofollow tag on outbound links to sites that are not directly related to your niche or who have shown *bad behavior* that Google doesn’t like, will keep some of your hard earned *link juice* where it belongs.
