There are many free keyword research tools that will help you enhance your small business marketing efforts and your online visibility.

When I first started blogging I completely underestimated the power of conducting proper keyword research, and I want to share some great information on the power of conducting thorough keyword research!

Today we will focus on one of many Internet marketing skills you should develop and hone.

Keyword Research Using SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool

One factor in getting found online and ranking on top of the search engines is to use relevant keywords others are searching for.

Keywords play a role in search engine optimization (SEO) as well.  Although, there is some debate on the weight of keywords and keyword placement strategies for SEO, there is no debate that having the right keywords matter in getting found on the search engine result pages on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Cenay wrote a great blog post recently on search engine optimization and blogging that might be a good read for you.   For now, let’s talk getting found via keywords.

There are many free keyword research tools that give you great insight on what your target market is searching for.

My favorite free keyword Research Tool is SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool.  It is the most thorough free keyword research tool out there.  Most free tools will give you limited variations of a keyword or keyword phrase, but SEO Book’s keyword suggestion tool does a great job of providing a variety of keyword variations and long tail keywords (keywords that are several words long) you can shoot for.

From the writer/marketer’s prospective, the long tail keywords tend to be a lot less competitive to rank for making it likelier for you to land on page 1 of the search engine results pages.

From the perspective of the person looking for a solution, the more specific the keyword phrase, the more you are in a position to give the person exactly what they are looking for (whether it be free content in written, verbal or video format) or whether it be a product.

Advantages of using the SEO Book Keyword Tool

There are many advantages in using this free keyword research tool for your SEO efforts.

  • First, it takes the daily average estimate of the three major search engine players (Google, Yahoo and MSN).
  • Secondly, it provides quite extensive results for keyword phrases you can shoot for considering it is a free tool.
  • Thirdly, it offers synonym information from resources like Yahoo Suggest and Google Suggest to provide additional keyword variations that might not have been picked up by the SEO Books tool allowing you to delve deeper into your research.
  • Fourthly, it provides more analytical information such as Google’s Insights for search, which demonstrates the search volume over a period of time.   This is great for those who love thoroughly analyzing data.

Keyword Research Example: Video Tutorial Using SEO Book Keyword Tool

In the video tutorial example below, we searched keyword phrases related to the “iphone”.   Hypothetically, if you are a retailer who has used the long tail keyword “where can I purchase an iphone” in his/her blog post effectively, you’ll land on page 1, and chances are that the person who was looking for a location to purchase his or her iphone might buy from your site.  Of course you will need to see what the competition is for that keyword phrase.

The video tutorial on the SEO Book keyword tool below briefly goes over some of the cool features in the SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool.  I admit it won’t do it 100% justice.  However, it will get you familiar with the tools there and allow you to explore and learn how to use it.
