So who wants to be a local twitter marketing rockstar? I am sure you do! Why neglect some cool people that you could do business with or build profitable partnerships with locally?
There are great connections to be made on Twitter. And if you dig in your very own backyard, you might just find some local marketers that are using Twitter to boost their local business revenues and build relationships with other local businesses.
A Local Twitter Business Marketing Manifestation: The Story Behind Fredericksburg Virginia’s ‘BizBurg’
Several months ago I connected with Paul Delagrange @businessplayce who is a cruise director in Fredericksburg, VA and is the owner of “Business Playce,” a co-working business environment. Paul rents out office space to solo-prenuers, entrepreneurs and work at home business owners in the area here. Like me, he’s a local business owner who has is passionate about social media and offline networking. I had heard of Paul through the grapevine, but it wasn’t until I stumbled across Paul on Twitter that we became friends. About 3 months ago, Paul organized a Twitter Happy Hour or small “Tweetup” in Fredericksburg and there I met several other Tweeps, including new friends who write for the local Fredericksburg, VA newspaper, The Freelance Star.
After some tweets I began meeting other folks connected to Paul and other business owners in Fredericksburg and Stafford, VA on Twitter. I’ve met local web, social media, and technology enthusiasts, including my new friend Conrad Agramont @agramont. Conrad owns, Agramont Services, here in Fredericksburg, and while I’m the relationship building and blogging mastermindress, he’s the technology and software guru. Conrad also has an awesome marketing brain, and we’ve been exchanging potent business building strategies over tweets and an occasional coffee cup offline at Starbucks!
I also have connected with several great folks who are local Tweeters. And just because we all have Twitter in common we feel a stronger connection. How powerful is that, eh.
Two or so Facebook groups ensued. One for local Tweeps and a newer one for BizBurg participants.
Friendships have been made and business has expanded for us all.
Paul Delagrage (@businessplayce) tweeted some time ago:
“What happens when you put a lawyer, marketer, techie, and a cruise director in a room together? @bizburg happens. Details to follow!
Finally @BizBurg (short for Business in the ‘Burg) was born.
A local Fredericksburg VA small business training group to educate and connect Fredericksburg and Stafford, VA brick and mortar and small businesses owners. Our first session will be on Social Media, Technology and Legal issues (how to use blogs and social media, technology to turbocharge local business marketing and personal growth). We have set up an site at Meetup to invite our local Tweeps and Facebook friends to connect, network and learn.
While BizBurg is in its infancy, the manifestation of these events, and the relationships built as a result, would not have been possible had it not been for Twitter. You know twitter is powerful when you don’t even know your local Tweeps’ phone numbers and you can reach them with a quick Direct Message on Twitter (even though they’re local)!
BizBurg meets for the first Time on June 9th at 6:30 pm in Fredericksburg, VA.
I’ve been having a blast connecting with some cool tweeps that are in my neck of the woods and have used several tools to monitor and track new Twitter users in my local vicinity.
How to Rock It Locally on Twitter
1) Find Local Twitter Users or Tweeps: Use Twitter search and Twellow (AKA the Twitter Yellow Pages) to find folks in your area. More and more free local Twitter directories are forming like @TweetVA. More on this in a future blog post on local twitter marketing techniques!
2) Engage local Tweeps in conversation: Get involved in those local conversations. Provide value. Make someone laugh. You’d be surprised how much quickly and effortlessly it is to build relationships on Twitter than it is to do so face to face.
3) Tweet Up – Meet at a restaurant and network.
4) Brainstorm, Plan, Take Action – Especially connect with a few Tweeps that you have a strong bond with. They would ideally be in your industry or related to your industry. For instance a Realtor, mortgage loan officer and an appraiser are all in the real estate business and could collaborate on a local Real Estate lead genration event for the community.
Other Platforms to Connect On
5) Facebook Group - Stay connected on Facebook as well. You can invite other area business owners that might not already be on Twitter. Expand your reach. Befriend friends of your friends. Build the relationships and continue to invite new friends that time.
6) Start a Meetup Group – Do this if You Plan on Making the Event a Recurring One. So many other can find you on other networks such as this huge one. You’d be surprise at the amount of Meetups in your local area!
Those are just 6 of many other twitter local marketing possibilities! They are endless.
What Local Twitter Marketing ideas have crossed your mind?
How long have you been on Twitter and what have you learned?
